Community School Initiative ProjectHarry Dawkins 350 Gramatan Avenue Hours: Monday-Friday ~ 9:00am-6:00pm Mission StatementThe mission of the Community School Initiative is to improve the academic, emotional, and social awareness of middle school youth. We accomplish this mission through community collaborations and partnerships which foster directed educational culture, recreational and counseling programs for at-risk youths and their families. The Community School Initiative, a component of Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Inc., was established at A.B. Davis Middle School in the city of Mt. Vernon in partnership with the Mt. Vernon School District and United Way of Westchester and Putnam. The program currently provides services for up to 75 students and adults. Mount Vernon was selected for the initiative in 1995 by United way due to the high number of at-risk youth and the dearth of programs to serve them. WestCOP's Community School Initiative provides free summer programs, free after school tutorial, computer programs, and in school on-site programs to support and compliment the academic and supportive programs that the teachers, social workers and guidance counselors strive to provide. In addition CSI's programs involve the parents and students in field trips and workshops. SERVICES
